FALL.BIO.MULTISAC
A recurring adaptation among major vertically mobile organisms is the use of multiple specialized gas sacs. It is common enough to shape the biosphere but not universal.
- Different gas chemistries may be suited to different atmospheric bands.
- Membranes may vary in strength, permeability, elasticity, and insulation.
- Pressure tolerance may differ between chambers.
- Organisms may expand, contract, vent, pump, metabolize, or transfer gases between sacs.
- Some sacs may provide lift, while others primarily stabilize pressure or orientation.
- Vertical movement can therefore occur through internal reconfiguration rather than wing-driven flight.
This is a foundational biological idea for the world because it later becomes the conceptual ancestor of human buoyancy technology.
